After a long stretch of work time in front of my laptop, I was about to call for a time-up. Then I checked my email once again, which is then I found out, Gmail changed their favicon!!! Earlier it was a simple G ,but now they have added some colors to it.

I like the change anyway, its about time.

First of all let me tell clarify what a favicon is, to the ones who don’t know what am talking about. Favicon is a small graphic associated with every website (page). It is essentially the icon in internet, similar to that in your computers.

So Gmail has changed their favicon, have you ?

Here’s how to add a favicon to your site.

Step 1: Create your favicon.

You can either download from the tens of thousands available from internet.

You can create one yourself. Make sure the image size is exactly 16X16, not a pixel more.

Tip: While creating you can use larger sizes such as 32X32 and then resize it.

Make sure your the file type extension is .ico (windows icon).

Step 2: Upload it to your root folder using any FTP client.

Step 3: If you had named the file with “favicon.ico”, then the favicon should automatically show up. Most browsers will automatically pick the icon up.

If its not comming, dont panic. Clear your cache then you re-try, even try another browser or try after some time, it should work.

Step 4: Add the following code to your <head> section.

<head>
  <link rel="SHORTCUT ICON" href="http://www.mydomain.com/myicon.ico"/>
  <title>My Title</title>
</head>

Actually the standards set in internet recommends that you use Step 4 not Step 3.
Thats how you add favicons. Try adding a favicon for your site now itself. Did you succeed or failed ? Did you resolve the problem ? Share your experience to others here as comments.

Gmail has now become the most popular email service provider and I think it is the best. Lot of features, fast loading, simple interface, great search and the list goes on.

Recently Google released themes for Gmail, with which you can personalize your gmail. Currently there are 26 different themes to choose from, I think in future google will provide more theme options.

Although changing theme is very simple, it can sometimes be tricky for those who have not used “Settings” much. This tutorial is for those people out there. Use this tutorial to change your gmail theme and have fun with it.

Step 1: Log into your gmail account.

If you dont have a gmail account create one, click on Sign Up.

Step 2: Click on Settings (On top-right) > Themes

Step 3: Select the theme of your choice.

Step 4: If you are doing this for the first time, a message will pop-up saying “Save your location”. Enter your location, if it is correct a green tick will appear, else a red cross. In that case change it to some other location. Once done right, then click Save. Note: this comes only once.

This step is not crucial or important. You can enter any location of your choice.

Step 5: Enjoy and have fun exploring and changing your new themes.

Try it if you haven’t done it yet. Contact me if you face any difficulties.

One more thing, this article was because of a request through “Orkut Scrap“. If you have any new ideas or doubts ask me. I will try to solve it. Share your thoughts about this post below.

Do you have more than one email account and do you have to daily log in to each one to update your inbox ??? Most of us have more than one email account. Myself has,hmm let me count, i think i have 10 accounts (which i was about to recall, am sure there are lot more). This includes, my personal account, business accounts, secret alias account, spam account (to sign up for various sites which will probably spam your inbox.), accounts used for exclusive services (like adsense), the list goes on… All of these are using various service providers, gmail, yahoo, hotmail, rediffmail, my own site cyriac.me (BTW it uses gmail’s software).

No matter what ever use you have, most of us have more than one email account, and we take pain to log in to each one to check the inbox. What i want to introduce today is an easy way to manage all these accounts.

I know two ways to manage multiple accounts,

  1. Gmail
  2. Microsoft Outlook

Its a bit hard to setup outlook and gmail is very easy to setup, also there is more functionality for it. The advantage for using gmail is apart from the fact that you receive all mails in one inbox you still can send emails (from gmail) so that the receiving party thinks you send that mail from yahoo or hotmail or any other.

How to do it ?

Phase 1

Setup gmail account so that it can send email on the name of other accounts (act as alias).

Step 1: Choose a gmail account as a primary email account.

If you dont have a gmail account create one, click on Sign Up.

Step 2: Click on Settings (On top-right) > Accounts

Step 3: Add the desired email (any email).

Now you will receive a verification email in that email account.

Step 4: Log into that email account and verify it.

Step 5: Phase 1 for one email account is over. Repeat this from Step 2 for other email accounts.

Phase 2

Change settings in individual accounts so that gmail can receive mails from them. The exact steps for different accounts will be different, it will be difficult to state them all, so i would give a general outline. Incase you have any trouble, please feel free to seek out my help.

Step 1: Log in to email account.

Step 2: Settings > Forwarding Option

Step 3: Set forward all mails to yourgmailaccount@gmail.com

If there is an option to filter out spam, then enable it, or else your primary account will be flooded with spam.

Step 4: Save it and you are done. Repeat these steps for what ever email accounts you wish to add.

Ok its done. Now what ?

After completing these steps you will receive any mail that you get in secondary email accounts in your primary account. The best part is if you want to reply to it, on the secondary account’s name, you can do it as follows.

Log in to your primary gmail account.

Step 1: Click compose

Step 2: Choose alias by clicking on the drop down menu From

Step 3: Compose mail and send it.

See how easy it is to setup. Do it and let me know the results. If you have any troubles, please do ask me, i will be more than happy to help.
